MSW Veterans Scholarship

According to SAMHSA (2018), roughly 50% of post 9/11 service members who need treatment for mental health conditions seek it, and only 50% of those veterans receive adequate care. There is a corresponding national shortage of social workers and other mental health professionals who are specifically prepared to serve veterans. Many veterans, especially those who have served in combat, prefer to work with therapists who have also served in the military.

Most veterans use their GI Bill® to fund their undergraduate degree, leaving them with little financial assistance if they wish to continue in a graduate program.

The School of Social Work at Michigan State University is actively addressing these needs by establishing a scholarship fund to support veterans during their graduate study. This scholarship is only for veterans who wish to earn an MSW in order to better serve other veterans and completing the Combat Veterans Certificate is required.

GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). More information about education benefits offered by VA is available at the official U.S. government website at https://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill.
