Use these answers to understand how MSW certificates fit into your degree plan, academic record and professional goals. Contact the coordinator for a specific certificate when your plan involves field placement, course sequencing or multiple certificates.
Are certificates required to graduate from the MSW program?
No. Certificate programs are optional opportunities that allow students to develop deeper knowledge and applied experience in a focused area.
Does an MSU School of Social Work certificate provide professional certification?
No. Some certificates may help students begin or advance toward an external credential, but the School’s certificate is not itself a professional license or certification. Ask the certificate coordinator how the program relates to external requirements.
Can I complete a certificate after graduation?
No. MSW certificate programs are currently available only to enrolled MSU MSW students. Some topics are also offered through the School’s continuing education programs.
May I complete more than one certificate?
Yes, when requirements and field experiences can be completed within your degree plan. Discuss the combination early with the coordinators for both certificates.
What is the difference between a certificate and a specialization?
Certificates are internal School of Social Work programs. Specializations are interdisciplinary programs coordinated with another MSU academic unit and may have separate university requirements.
What is the purpose of completing a certificate?
A certificate helps students focus electives and field experiences, build deeper knowledge and demonstrate sustained study in a professional area. Some programs may also provide a foundation for future credentialing.
Will a certificate appear on my transcript or diploma?
No. School of Social Work certificates are internal awards and do not appear on the MSU transcript or diploma.
