  • COMMITTEE CHARGE

The SSW EDIC has a strong commitment to the equity, diversity, and inclusion of our students, staff and faculty, as well as among our courses and program offerings. MSU SSW EDI recognizes that strengthening structural as well as individual opportunities improve the quality of our teaching, research, and outreach. Further, the inclusion of diverse perspectives strengthens our ability to study and provide services in a diverse society. SSW EDIC is committed to creating and sustaining an equitable, accessible, inclusive and supportive community that includes faculty, students, and staff. The SSW EDIC is committed to encouraging and supporting a welcoming and inclusive university community so that we can learn from one another on how to sustain and continually revitalize our research, courses and outreach initiatives to best prepare social workers for an equitable, diverse, and inclusive community at local, national, and global contexts.

Strengthening and promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion is integral to the SSW EDIC Committee. Central to achieve these goals are emphasizing faculty hiring and development; student recruitment and retention; outreach; course offerings; instruction and content; research and evaluation. SSW EDIC outlines a framework to address the following priority goals:

    • Contribute to an inclusive and welcoming environment in the SSW.
    • Recommend best practices to encourage diversity in student recruitment, retention, and outreach in SSW programs.
    • Contribute to the recruitment and hiring of diverse SSW faculty by cultivating a pipeline of scholars who engage in research relating to underrepresented and marginalized populations.
    • Develop collaborations that promote diverse collegial relationships and interactions at all levels of the school, college, university, and community through the development of research, programs and outreach initiatives.
    • Strengthen students, faculty and staff through effective mentoring and leadership development.
    • Strengthen course content and offerings on diversity and oppressed populations.
    • Provide leadership in SSW and public events and other diversity-related events.

As members of the Michigan State Community, the School of Social Work holds activities and initiatives in support of the College of Social Science and Michigan State University's overall diversity plans. The SSW-EDIC is contributing to move those strategic planning efforts forward.
