Application and admission

Applying to the MSW program.

After being admitted, what semester do students start their program?

Students are admitted for the Summer semester for Advanced Standing or Statewide Blended programs. Students in the Regular MSW program are admitted for the Fall semester.

How do I apply to the MSW program?

All applicants to Michigan State University graduate programs use the online application system through the Office of Admissions. Review the detailed steps and required materials on the Application Information and Instructions page.

Can applicants send a hard copy of their application?

No. All application materials must be submitted online. Review the Application Information and Instructions page for the complete process.

Can hard copies of reference letters be sent?

No. All reference letters must be submitted online. Requirements for recommenders and reference letters are included on the Application Information and Instructions page.

When will an applicant be contacted about the status of their application?

Applicants can check their status online, see which materials are missing and make changes until the application is complete. Applicants are responsible for confirming that all required materials have been received.

What are the requirements for admission to the Regular MSW program?

If an applicant is denied admission, can they reapply the following year?

Yes. A new, complete application using the current forms must be submitted.

Is financial aid available?

Yes. Michigan State University and the School of Social Work offer programs that may help support social work students financially.

Testing requirements

English proficiency and the GRE.

Is the TOEFL required?

Yes, the TOEFL is required for international students. Visit the Graduate School website for additional information.

Before enrolling in Social Work courses, all international applicants must be assessed by MSU's English Language Center.

Is the GRE required?

No. The GRE is not required for admission to the MSW program.
