Certificate Programs

The School currently offers ten certificate programs at the MSW level:

+Addiction Studies
CERTIFICATE PROGRAM IN ADDICTIONS STUDIES is designed for students to develop their professional skill base for work in substance use disorder, mental health, and recovery support service settings. Learn more
+Chance at Childhood
CHANCE AT CHILDHOOD PROGRAM CERTIFICATE IN CHILD & FAMILY ADVOCACY is intended to cross-train law and graduate-level social work students interested in legal advocacy on behalf of abused, neglected, and at-risk children and families. This joint program is offered by the MSU School of Social Work and the MSU College of Law. Learn more
+Child Welfare
CHILD WELFARE CERTIFICATE is designed to recruit, develop, and retain a highly competent, ethical, and responsive professional child welfare workforce in Michigan. As a certificate recipient, a social work graduate will be given preference for potential employment with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Learn more
+Clinical Social Work with Families
CERTIFICATE PROGRAM IN CLINICAL PRACTICE WITH FAMILIES develops clinical skills in relational therapy with individuals, couples, and families in their social environments. This certificate satisfies partial educational requirements for the Limited License in Marriage and Family Therapy (LLMFT) in the state of Michigan. Learn more
+Combat Veterans
COMBAT VETERANS CERTIFICATE is designed for students who are interested in working with service men and women who have been exposed to the trauma of war or military conflict. Through completion of three courses that use an innovative storytelling approach, students learn about military culture; the experience of war; common post-war challenges veterans face; the existing system of care; improving policies and programs to better meet veterans’ needs; as well as intervention models that are effective in helping veterans heal from the wounds of war. +Evidence Based Trauma Treatment
The EVIDENCE BASED TRAUMA TREATMENT CERTIFICATE provides students with the opportunity to develop competencies in working with individuals who have experienced trauma and implementing an evidence-based practice. Students will choose to focus their certificate in working with children and adolescents who have experienced complex trauma, or survivors of relationship violence and sexual assault. Learn more
+Human Services Management
The HUMAN SERVICES MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE is designed specifically for OCL/macro social work students. Offered in partnership with the Network for Social Work Management, the certificate is designed for students interested in expanding their knowledge and skills in leadership and management in human services. Learn more
+Levande Program in Gerontology
LEVANDE PROGRAM IN GERONTOLOGY cultivates competence needed for gerontological social work practitioners and leaders. This certificate program covers theories, policies, and skills essential to serving elders in a variety of practice settings. Learn more
+School Social Work
CERTIFICATE PROGRAM IN SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK is for students who wish to work as a school social worker upon graduation from the MSW Program or focus on work with school-age children and adolescents. Learn more
+Social Work in Health Care
SOCIAL WORK IN HEALTH CARE CERTIFICATE focuses on aspects of care in the areas of health promotion, chronic illness, and injury or disability. Students address these areas through working in a two-semester field setting that promotes experience in interprofessional collaboration, biopsychosocial assessments, and practice skills specific to health care settings. Students may apply to the programs by completing and mailing the application below, which is due at the same time as the field application. Each program has its own coursework and field placement requirements.
