When did you decide to pursue a degree in social work?
After obtaining my undergraduate degree, I found a job as a Mental Health Worker in a behavioral health hospital. Working with the patients and clinicians at the hospital was very gratifying for me and motivated me to pursue social work. During my Masters in Social Work program, I was fortunate to assist professors with their research projects. I immediately knew then that research was going to be a part of my social work career.
Social work is such a versatile field that there are so many different and satisfying career paths a person can choose from. My social work journey has shaped the person I am proud to be today, and I have never regretted my decision to pursue a social work career.
Do you have any advice for others considering social work?
One of the best pieces of advice given to me during my studies was to “take time for yourself”. I believe social work is one of the most challenging professions in today’s fields of employment. Therefore, it is important to take care of oneself; to carve out some time from a busy schedule to enjoy other hobbies, activities or interests outside of work/school. This will allow you to be the best person you can be. Some of my own personal favorite activities include playing video games and playing with my cat.
Why did you choose MSU?
The main reason why I decided to pursue my doctorate degree at Michigan State University is because of the people I met from MSU during the application process. Everyone was very welcoming and genuinely interested in me as a person and not just as another applicant. Applying to a doctorate program can be an overwhelming process. However, when I applied to MSU the staff and professors addressed all of my questions and made me feel at ease.
