In today's complex and competitive environment, most social work practitioners do not
have the time to enroll in courses that require them to drive to campus and complete the
required work. Whether it is for personal enrichment, professional advancement, or required
continuing education, the School's on-line courses provide opportunities for learning that
are bound neither time of day nor by geographic location.
As noted below, the School has already developed five on-line courses, and more will be
developed in the future. However, it is NOT possible to complete the entire MSW degree
program on-line at MSU. The nature of social work education is such that a major part of
the requirements will involve face-to-face work. Even programs that are moving toward the
inclusion of on-line courses still require a considerable amount of time in field education.
In fact, there are no schools of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work
Education that offer the entire MSW degree program on-line. MSU does offer the MSW
degree program in certain locations in Michigan, and you can click here for more
information about these programs.
The courses currently available on-line focus on school social work settings, and additional
information about the courses is available by using the links below. We invite you to check
this page periodically for announcements about new courses added to the list of available
on-line offerings.
These three courses have been designed specifically for MSW students or graduates to cover
State-designated required areas for students who want to be eligible for State of Michigan approval
as a School Social Worker. Additional information is available here.
In addition, there is a "refresher course" for school social workers to update their knowledge and skills:
