Applicants to the regular MSW program can select full- or part-time enrollment status. Full-time students complete the program in two academic years, while part-time options require completion of the MSW program on either a three or four year plan of study. The advanced standing MSW program is open only to applicants who have graduated from a Council on Social Work Education accredited social work baccalaureate program within the last six years; it may be completed on a full-time basis in one calendar year with required coursework beginning in mid-summer (around July 1st) and ending the following May or on a part-time basis with required coursework beginning in mid-summer and ending in May of the second academic year of study.

Applicants must apply to the MSU Graduate School AND the School of Social Work to be considered for admission to any MSW program.
You are only considered an applicant to the School of Social Work program when we receive all social work application materials. It is the applicant's responsibility to make certain that all materials are received by the School's established deadline.
The University will only allow you to apply for one graduate program at a time. You will need to identify your program options. Below is a list of options.

Please Note: Do not use the Graduate School reference forms, personal statement, or academic statement they provide on their application. In the School of Social Work's application (Step 2) you will have a list of specific questions you will need to address. You will not need to upload a personal statement and/or academic statement.

MSU Students: If an applicant has been or is currently an undergraduate student at Michigan State University, s/he does not need to order official MSU transcripts. We will obtain an applicant's MSU records from the Registrar's Office. You will, however, need to submit one official transcript from any college(s) and/or university(s) that you have attended (MSU excluded) for inclusion in your admission materials. Please send to:

Reference Letters: We are interested in letters of reference from persons who can evaluate your academic and professional potential - teachers, work or volunteer supervisors, social work professionals, academic advisors, etc. Do not use personal or family acquaintances, friends, relatives, therapists, ministers, or religious leaders. Please click here to view the information requested from your references. PLEASE NOTE: All reference letters must be electronically submitted. Once you create a School of Social Work application you will be asked to provide names and email address of each referent. Once you have done this, you then click on the "send request" button. This will send the referent an email that will explain what areas they need to address in your letter. They are also provided a link to directly upload a pdf version of their letter to your application. We will not accepted a hard copy of the reference letter.

General Information for East Lansing joint MSW/JD program:
The School of Social Work and the MSU College of Law offer a joint degree program for students who wish to pursue the MSW and JD concurrently on the East Lansing campus. The joint program offers students the opportunity to complete both degrees in 4 academic years of full-time study. Applicants must apply to both programs, satisfying the respective requirements and completing all admission materials of each school. Each school will reach admission decisions independently. The admission decision made by one school shall have no effect on the admission decision of the other. Only those applicants accepted to both schools will be considered for acceptance into the dual degree program. Both clinical and organization and community practice advanced concentrations are available.
