School Social Work Competency Series

Courses Offered Online Only

These School Social Work Competency courses are offered for Social Work Continuing Education Credits or for University credit.

Michigan State University School of Social Work offers a rigorous professional development competency series for master's-level social work practitioners interested in advancing their knowledge in social work intervention in educational settings, assessment, and integration of psychological and educational testing and intervention with children with special needs in educational settings. The School Social Work Competency Series in the School of Social Work at Michigan State University is an online series of courses designed to meet specific educational requirements set forth by the state of Michigan Department of Education. If you live outside of Michigan, we encourage you to contact the Department of Education in the state where you wish to practice to learn about the competencies and requirements set forth by that state.

Students currently enrolled in the School’s MSW Program may do these courses as a certificate program. In addition to meeting all degree requirements, students must meet specific course requirements as listed. Please note that you do not need to obtain the certificate in order to become eligible for temporary approval as a School Social Worker in the state of Michigan, although doing so serves as a formal mechanism representing your commitment and knowledge to this specialization. Students who have already earned the MSW degree are not eligible for the certificate program but may take the Competency Series through our continuing education program.
